Continents of the world

World is divided into 7 continents, which are identified as large, continuous, discrete masses of land, ideally separated by expanses of water.

Seven continents are as: Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe and Australia.

Asia is the largest continent with an area of 43,820,000 sq km, Africa stands second with 30,370,000 sq km, North America stands third with 24,490,000 sq km, South America comes fourth with an area of 17,840,000 sq km, and Antarctica has an area of 13,720,000 sq km, while Europe and Australia has jurisdiction over 10,180,000 and 9,008,500 sq km respectively.

It is interesting to note here that Greenland with 2,166,086 sq km in area is deemed to be an island, while Australia with an area of just 7,617,930 sq km is considered as a continent.

The total surface area of all continents is 148,647,000 sq km, which accounts for 29.1 per cent of earth's surface.
